Have you seen the candle in the front window of the Foxborough Universalist Church and wondered 'What's that candle lit for?' The candle has been lit since April 2003 and serves as a symbol of the congregation's continued prayers for peace, especially in Iraq. One of the principles of Unitarian Universalism is "to affirm and promote the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all." Since the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) was formed in 1961, Unitarian Universalists (UUs) have passed more than 80 resolutions to support peace and disarmament. UUs observe these resolutions and their principles to promote peace through their daily actions. In response to the escalating violence around the world and to clarify the denominations' views about nonviolent and violent resolutions to disputes between peoples and nations, during this year's General Assembly, "Peacemaking" was voted to be the UUA Congregational Study/Action Issue for 2006-2010. What do all these have to do with the candle in the window and peace vigils? To further: the congregation's hopes, adherences to their principles, and a beginning step in their participation in the Action Issue, the Social Action Committee of the Foxborough Universalist Church, a Unitarian Universalist Congregation, will hold a Peace Vigil from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. the first Thursday of every month. Everyone is invited to participate - please show up during the hour and stay as long or as short as your schedule allows. Candles will be provided. There will be a sign explaining what we are doing. The Foxborough Universalist Church is located
at 6 Bird Street (on the Foxborough Common); directions to the church can
be found through www.uufoxborough.org.
December 2007, marked the 1st Anniversary of the First Thursdays Peace Vigils.
